Of all the things the 12 skating coaches I’ve had have said to me, who would have thought “It’s not chess.” would help me the most?

When I skated yesterday I just kept saying to myself “kamakazie” – it’s how I play chess – and I skated really well and with some speed!

I didn’t fall or pull off any doubles, but I’m incredibly sore and tired today so I know I worked harder than usual.

Here’s some video of me doing my 5-step mohawk pattern better than ever, backward outside 3-turns on BOTH feet, some better Waltz jumps and my ChaCha: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSGli5PRRhs

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: “Your body will always think it’s doing more than it actually is.”

I was having a good skate yesterday so I decided to try some split jumps. I knew I wasn’t Sasha Cohen with the perfect split but I thought it wasn’t so bad. Then I watched the video. Whah, whah, whah :/

Ok, you can watch the video too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OY82J38XrC0

What’s worse is that when I watched it right after on my camera’s little screen it didn’t look so bad. I was so excited about it that I showed the video to Mean Coach (I usually do not say a word to Mean Coach outside of my lesson – he scares me!) He said it was good, but now that I see it on a big screen (and watched it in slow motion) I see he was just being polite. (I hope I don’t have to change his name to Polite Coach.)

I also taped some of my “jumps.” Yeah, quotations around the word jumps because I barley get off the ice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0y66ieKFhM
I think I’m like the Skee-Lo of figure skating. Remember that guy, the short rapper popular in like the mid-90s. He wrote the song “I Wish.” I wish I was a little bit taller, I wish I was a baller …” Well my version would be:

“I wish I was little bit smaller,
I wish I was a faller
I wish I had a mother who understood
I would call her
I wish I had axel down pat, no splat
and videos that go viral.”

Bring Back TripleAxel1996

I logged on to YouTube last night to watch my favorite skating performance (the Duchsnay’s 1992 Olympic polka) only to find TripleAxel1996, the account posting the video, is suspended.

I’m pretty miffed because TripleAxel1996 had posted hundreds of great skating performances. Why they suspended his account I’m not sure, but I’m sure it has something to do with copyright (aka MONEY!).

Bring him back YouTube! It’s not like all the people who watch his videos didn’t already tape those performances when they first aired. It’s just none of us remember how to work our VCRs to watch them.

It is doubtful that an adult figure skating competition will ever be broadcast on television, but there are places you can watch adult figure skaters in action.

IceNetwork.com – Subscribers have access to coverage of the upcoming U.S. Adult National Figure Skating Competition as well as past Adult National and Sectional competitions.

YouTube.com – Many adult figure skaters post videos of themselves skating. It is great to see the progress some have made in such a short time. One of my favorite skaters is Alanna. Check out her progress at http://www.youtube.com/user/icekat83

Movies – While Kathy Griffin gave a great performance as an adult figure skater in “On Edge,” director Nisma Zaman is working on a documentary about adult figure skating. She created a production company, Ice Docs, and began work on a feature documentary following five skaters to the 2006 Adult Nationals.

“Nobody here is going to the Olympics, so I’m curious why adults would devote so much time, money, and energy to such an anxiety-ridden, injury-inducing sport,” Zaman told the Ithaca College Quarterly in 2006.

Zaman is still hard at work on the film. If you’d like to be added to her distribution list for info on the film e-mail her at nisma@icedocs.com.
