Why Skate As An Adult?

I still have no idea why.

But I’m not the only one who does this. There are thousands of adult skaters out there! And some of them, like me, write blogs about it. One of my favorites is “My Adventures In Skating” at http://community.livejournal.com/skittles_skates/

A little while ago “Skittles” stopped skating due to injury, but she’s back now and facing many of the same issues I’m facing, like private coach or group lessons?

Her Feb. 6 post really hit home with me and I left this commet:
“Me too! Even though I was just off the ice for about three months I feel totally lost.
I skated for 20 minutes today and felt like I skated for 20 hours – all my stamina is gone.

And I look at people taking their lessons and I so miss that colaberation. But I’m just not ready to take private lessons again.
1. I’m so out of shape.
2. I don’t want to get attached to another coach and then have to leave them again in a couple of years. Like I’m a very out-of-sight out-of-mind person but my last two freestyle coaches I just miss terribly. (even though the one was so friggin mean)

I too thought about taking LTS and then I thought what level do I sign up for? I’ll be so embarassed to go into a lower level.

So now I just go to the rink like once or twice a week and be miserable. I don’t talk to anyone. I don’t play any music. I don’t practice the dances. I hardly do any freeskating and when I spin I feel like I’ll hurl.

It would be so easy right now to quit skating but I just can’t and I don’t know why.”

(If you know why, now would be the time to tell me.)

I then checked in on Maueen Winzig’s blog. http://maureenwinzig.webs.com/apps/blog/ She’s an artist and poet in New York and looks nothing like her self-protrait – she’s a very beautiful woman, inside and out. Anyway I found this entry:

It seems the world has gone mad. Sure, that’s what’s been said for centuries but hey, don’t you think it’s all been cranked up a notch??? What the hell, if we can’t find our voice then what’s the point? If we can’t express, then how will others know they are not alone in their thoughts? We have the freedom to reach out and collectively share our thoughts like never before. Why not speak up? Tell each other our ideas, outrage, hope and solutions. Show the world we are not just drones waiting to be herded into the next bus.

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about the things that matter.-Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Mediocrity and complacency are so bourgeois. Artists, writers, and world citizens alike ~ I implore you to share with me and each other just what makes you boil. What makes you crazy and what are you doing about it? Do you twist it into macrame? Paint it on the sides of buildings? Write madly till the wee hours? Are you showing your work? Are you reading to an audience? Are you dancing till your soles are sore?”

My soles aren’t nearly sore enough.

There Is Plenty Of Time

“Whatever our dreams are, we practically hear a clock ticking. Our family, our friends, even the media all make us wonder when we are finally going to be “there” and why we aren’t there yet.

But there are no age restrictions on success. It takes as long as it takes, and when you reach it, you won’t reject success because you’re not the right age for it.”

From “The 100 Simple Secrets of Successful People” by David Niven, Ph.D.
